CRITICAL THINKING PPT 2 Flashcards
Rationality, Cognitive Biases, Emotions
(lectures based on Stuart Hanscomb )
“Reflective thinking is always more or less troublesome because it involves overcoming the inertia that inclines one to accept suggestions at their face value.”
(John Dewey, the alleged father of Critical Thinking as a discipline, 1910)
(Learning and practicing critical thinking makes us more rational.) Examples:
(Aug.2, 2018) Senator Ping Lacson suggested to Pres. Duterte: donate to the PNP the smuggled luxury cars or sports cars, like Porsche, Ferrari, or Hummer; instead of just destroying them. Why so?
1) as confiscated goods, these are gov’t. properties or assets which can be better used;
2) Criminals will be caught off-guard; they do not expect policemen in tinted luxury cars patrolling the streets. Is this suggestion practical? Or workable?
the grounds on which we base our beliefs.
