Critical / Conflict Flashcards
Liazos 1972
claimed that we are worrying about the wrong subjects (street criminals)
corporate crime is ultimately more damaging that any crime committed by the poor
a person can be violated in many more ways, including a social system that starves and manipulates him.
Liazo’s critiques of labelling theory
- attempt to humanize “deviants”
- sensationalism - exaggeration of issues to attract attention/interest
- “top dogs” are ignored and left to do as they please.
Marx
capitalism created the divide between proletariat (working class) and bourgeoisie (corporate elite)
bourgeoisie attain their power through surplus value/profit, wealth accumulation.
POVERTY and NEED = MORE CRIME
Bonger
argued that economic conditions cause crime
primitive societies REQUIRED altruism
capitalist surplus creates selfishness and generates need, thus increasing crime.
the post-modern
focuses on meaning, social difference, discourse analysis, deconstruction.
LANGUAGE!!! = MEANING + POWER
key ideas of the post-modern
- no objective truths, only differing ways of interpreting social worlds
- many truths - social theories are only grand narratives
- social change must be based on exposing controlling elements disguised by language (deconstructionalism)
