critical care Flashcards
what is critical care
organ system support (single or multiple)
level 1 care
ward based care
level 2 care
HDU, single organ support
level 3 care
intensive care, multiple organs needing support
resp failure type 1
oxygenation failure
resp failure type 2
oxygenation and ventilation failure (fail to clear CO2)
hypovolaemic shock
can be secondary to prolonged dehydration or blood/fluid losses
not enough blood to go round - body will prioritise where gets blood and other tissues suffer
anaphylactic shock
blood vessels abnormally dilate and blood goes to wrong areas
degree of cardiac stunning to pump failure too
distributive (septic) shock
blood vessels have abnormally dilated and blood going to wrong place
neurogenic shock
predominantly trauma to spinal cord
disruption of sympathetic nervous system causes abnormal vasodilation within tissues of peripheries
cardiogenic shock
pump/heart failure
heart is issue - not able to get blood round body and so get O2 to tissues
colloid fluid
fluid with large osmotically active molecules within
can cause issues with kidney
gone out of fashion
crystalloid fluids
fluids with small molecules
e.g. dextrose, 0.9% saline
maintenance fluids
they can’t eat/drink and fluids are nutritional
resuscitation fluids
giving fluids as therapy as fast as possible
give individualised volume to patient ASAP and assess results
