Critical Care Flashcards
What is critical care?
This is the management of an individual with organ failure, it can either be single or multiple organ failure
In what ward could single organ failure be managed
High dependency unit
In what ward could multiorgan failure be managed
ICU
What types of respiratory failure are there
Type 1 - Oxygenation failure
Type 2 - Oxygenation and ventilation failure
Describe the CO2 and O2 levels in type 1 respiratory failure
CO2 stays the same
O2 is low
Describe the CO2 and O2 levels in type 2 respiratory failure
CO2 is high
O2 is low
Give 2 causes of type 2 respiratory failure
COPD exacerbation
Severe pneumonia
What is a nasal cannula
An oxygenation device which produces a small amount of pressure into the airway
In which type of respiratory failure is the nasal cannula beneficial
Type 1 respiratory failure
can be done on HDU
In which type of respiratory failure is non invasive ventilation beneficial
Type 2
This patient tends to be panting and tired
What are the disadvantages of non invasive ventilation
The patient cannot talk, eat or drink
What are the 4 advantages of intubation
- Provides a protected airway
- Vomiting doesn’t affect it
- The closed circuit means 100% oxygen can be delivered
- May open up parts of the lung no taking part in gaseous exchange
What is a disadvantage of intubation
Cannot clear secretions
What is shock
Acute circulatory failure with inadequate or inappropriately distributed tissue perfusion resulting in cellular hypoxia
State the 5 types of shock
Distributive (septic) Hypovolaemic Anaphylactic Neurogenic Cardiogenic
