Critical Care Flashcards
What are the different types of ventialtion?
Volume controlled ventilation
Pressure controlled ventilation
What is volume controlled pressure ventilation?
Ventilator delivers a pre set tidal volume
What is a pressure controlled pressure ventilator?
Flow is delivered to a pre set target pressure limit during inspiration
What is CPAP?
Continuous positive airway pressure
Provides positive pressure but with no mandatory breaths so the patient has to breathe spontaneously
What are the roles of the physiotherapist on critical care?
Maintenance and improvement of CR status
Maintenance of MSK function
Work as part of a wider critical care MDT
ABGs
What is the Ax in critical care / ITU?
Respiratory system Cardiovascular system CNS Renal system MSK Bloods ABCDE approach
Why do we suction ventilated patients?
Removal of bronchial secretions is important for gas exchange
What are the methods of suctioning?
Open suction
Closed suction
What is open suctioning?
Patient is temporarily removed and disconnected from the ventilator whilst suctioning occurs
What is closed suctioning?
The patient remains attached to the ventilator
What are the complications of suctioning?
Hypoxia / hypoxemia Tissue trauma Atelectasis Bronchospasm Increase / decrease in BP
What is manual hyperinflation?
A powerful way of opening atelectasis lung areas, improves oxygenation and facilitates the removal of secretions
(mimics ACBT)
