ABGs Flashcards
What is acidosis?
Lowers pH
What is alkalosis?
Raises pH
What is respiratory acidosis?
pH less than 7.35 with a PaCO2 greater than 6KPa
Caused be an increase of CO2
Can be caused by hypoventilation (CO2 retention)
What is respiratory alkalosis?
pH greater than 7.45 with a PaCO2 less than 4.7KPa
Caused by hyperventilation (removes carbon dioxide at a quicker rate than normal)
What is metabolic acidosis?
pH less than 7.35 with a bicarbonate level less than 22mmol l-1
Caused by a deficit of bicarbonate in the bloodstream or an excess acid
What is metabolic alkalosis?
pH greater than 7.45 with a bicarbonate level greater than 26mmol l-1
Caused by an excess of bicarbonate or a loss of acid
