Crisis
time limited event that triggers adaptive or non-adaptive responses to maturational, situational or traumatic experiences.
Developmental crisis or maturational
normal part of growth and development - allows the child to advance to the next stage. such as leaving home for the first time, completing school and accepting the responsibility of adulthood.
Situational crisis
disruptive even that occurs - can be bio, psycho and or social and can b be internal or external. such as graduation from high school, move to another city, job promotion.
Traumatic crisis
unexpected, unusual events that can affect an individual or a multitude of people. such as war, rape, murder, earthquakes, floods, forest, fires
Crisis intervention goal
return to pre- crisis level of functioning
Nurses role in crisis
provide a framework of support systems that guide the patient through the crisis and assist the development of positive coping skills
Emergency care alert of crisis
high risk for suicide or homicide. assess carefully, if present must refer.
Interventions during crisis
treat acute symptoms, administer benzodiazepines for short term to allow patient(s) to do what they must do (funeral arrangements, etc), provide safety, do not give false reassurances, clarify facts, find and link support persons or systems
Discharge plans for crisis
improved health and wellbeing, adequate social functioning, keep referral appointments,
