The first attending officer
The first uniformed service to arrive on a crime scene usually the police
5 duties they must perform
- Check victim
- Seal off the crime area
- Detain potential witnesses/suspects
- Keep a record of the scene
- Pass information Onto the forensic team when they arrive
Scene of crime officers
Usually civilians and they only collect evidence
Hazards at a crime scene
- inhalation
- Skin absorption
- Ingestion
- Injection
Physical evidence
- Environmental: tyre tracks
- Biological: blood
- Weapons: knife
Psychological evidence
Information available to an offender profile from the crime scene and physical evidence
What is a profiler
Cerastes a psychological profile of an offender. Is trained or self taught. They narrow down the list of suspects by adopting different techniques. A number of profilers may be asked to work on the same case and create their own profiles and they don’t have an special authority
Top down approach (US)
Developed by the FBI academy in Virginia case by case, they establish behaviour patterns and information from similar cases and interviews.
Bottoms up approach (UK)
Was thought of by David Canter and established statistical patterns of cooler atop a but doesn’t work in similar cases.
