What is Deviance?

A

-Deviance is any behaviour that violates social norms (established rules or standards of behaviour that are socially shared), and is usually of sufficient severity to warrant disapproval from the majority of society.

-Deviance can be criminal or non-criminal.

-When thinking of deviance it is more about the reactions of society to the act than the act itself.

What are Negative Sanctions

A

These are Expressions of disapproval for deviance.
Range from frowns and gossip for breaking folkways to imprisonment and death for breaking mores and laws.

In general, the more seriously the group takes a norm, the harsher the penalty for violating it.
