What are the three courts
Justice of the piece court, sheriff court and high court

Justice of the Peace Courts are the lowest level of criminal court in Scotland and handle relatively minor crimes
What is the sheriff court
Sheriff Courts deal with crimes which are too serious for a District Court but not serious enough for a High Court
What is the high court
The High Court is Scotland’s highest criminal court The High Court deals with the most serious of crimes such as murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and sexual offences involving children
Explain the roles of the child hearing system
Children under the age of 12are not held criminally un responsible and are instead put in a child hearing system and u16 are usually considered un responsible unless the crime is serious. They also decide wether or not a child needs extra help such as help from social workers or removal from their family.
What are the powers of the justice of the piece court
Up to 2.5k fine, up to 60dys in prison

Maximum fine of 10k, maximum sentence if 1 year
What are the powers of the sheriff court(solemn)
Maximum fine is unlimited, maximum sentence of 5 years

Unlimited amount of fines, up to life in sentence
