What is crime?
Defined as any act or lack of acting that violates the law and results in punishment by the state.
What are criminal behaviours?
A social construct as they rely on the laws in each society and the social context in which the behaviour takes place
What did Farr & Gibbons (1990) suggest?
There are seven categories for different types of crime two of which are:
1. property predatory crime
2. Interpersonal violence general
What is property predatory crime?
Persons are involved in attempting to or actually taking the personal property of others without permission
What is interpersonal violence general?
Persons are involved in actions that threaten or cause actual personal harm
What did Cherie Griffiths (2014) aim to do?
summarise the key characteristics of different types of offenders.
What are the characteristics of disorganised murderers?
- Below average IQ
- Possibly a highschool drop out
- Socially inadequate
- Live alone
- Often unskilled worker/labourer
- Low birth order status
What are the characteristics of organised murders?
- Above average/high IQ
- Follow the media
- Socially adequate
- Tend to live with a partner and are sexually competent
- High birth order status
- Often described as ‘charming’
What are the characteristics of acquisitive criminals?
- Pleasure/thrill seeking
- Sometimes have a formal motivation
- May be motivated by intelligence or economic reasons
