what is crime
any act that violates the law and results in punishment by the state. a crime is only a crime if a law is broken
what did Farr and Gibbons suggest
there are 7 categories for different types of crime
7 properties of crime and example
- property predatory crime e.g. burglary
- property fraudulent crime e.g. embezzlement or bribery
- interpersonal general violence e.g. murder or assault
- interpersonal sexual violence e.g. rape or incest
- transactional vice e.g. prostitution or drug sales
- order disruption e.g. disorderly conduct/ rioting
- folk/mundane crime e.g. fishing without a license
personality characteristics of sex offenders
-individuals who engage in sexual contact with young children or adolescence
- individuals who like inflicting pain or humiliation on others
-individuals who like exposing themselves in a public setting
personality characteristics of murderers type 1
-individual with a below average IQ
- possibly a high school drop out
- generally socially inadequate
- received harsh or inconsistent punishment in childhood
personality characteristics of murderers type 2
- above average or high IQ
- individuals who generally follow the media
-tend to live with a partner and tend to be sexually competent
–harshly disciplined in childhood
personality of acquisitive criminals
-generally seek access to criminal activity for pleasure or thrill
-occasionally will have a formal motivation or cause for their crimes
-some of these will take on either an intelligence or an economical reason behind the commission of the crime
personality characteristics of terrorists
-tend to be non-combatant civilians who are acting from a place of a perceived injustice or wrong against a person or persons
-sometimes motivated by political issues of the day
-potential psychological defect that produce these behaviours (paranoia or schizophrenia)
