Crime Topic 6 Q1 Flashcards
Aim
To create a mock prison to allow role playing pps to go deeply into their characters
Hypothesis
Being a guard or prisoner will result in significantly different reactions of interaction, mood, self attitudes, pathology, coping & adaption
Method
Lab experiment. IV= guard/prisoner, DV= behaviour. Observation, self report questionnaires & interviews.
Design
Independent measures
Sample
Volunteers, Palo Alto Times, Stamford Daily Newspapers, 75 interviewed/ tested, 24 male mid class college students= 10 prisoners, 11 guards, 3 reserves.
Procedure
- Prison= cells with 3 beds, solitary confinement, guard rooms, bedroom for superintendent, interview & Yard room. Cameras & bars on doors. All sign contract= minimal adequate diet, clothing, medical care & payment. For 2 weeks, guards work 3 man 8hr shifts, told to maintain order & decide how to deal with prisoners. Guards wear military style uniform & mirrored sunglasses, have whistles to show authority.
- Prisoners wear loose smocks with their number on, chain & lock on one ankle. No personal belongings or underwear. They were arrested at home by Palo Alto Police
Results
- guards verbally aggressive, some cruel- made prisoners clean toilets with bare hands. Some were fair & passive.
- prisoners- 5 released early due to extreme depression, crying, rage, anxiety & a psychosomatic rash
Conclusions (1)
- prison environment has negative effects on guards & prisoners. Guards develop pathology of power= unchecked freedom to exert power makes them abuse it, they felt no personal responsibility
Conclusion (2)
- prisoners develop pathological prisoner syndrome: disbelief, then flattened emotional & passivity & illness
Conclusion (3)
Ordinary individuals can play roles to extremes although their are some individual differences. Mostly the study supports a situational view of prisons affecting guards and prisoners negatively.
Conclusion (4)
Haney suggests the study provides a paradigm for better guard training & operation of prisons so that reform can work effectively
