- male role models often glorify crime (even subconsciously), and young men identify with this - rappers, movies etc
- Messerschmidt: men turn to crime when they can’t succeed in legit ways (status frustration) —> their socialisation allows for this (masculine traits of competition)

- Miller & Merton (subculturalists): young men more prone to hegemonic structure due to WC subcultures
- Lyngs edgework theory can also be applied to masculinity thesis
