Crime Stats - Class Flashcards
Newburn & Sutherland
Newburn: Sociologists tend to focus on crimes of the powerless (WC) rather than powerful as crime stats show this to be the case
Sutherland: crime not just a WC phenomenon but spreads through society —> seen by his work in Chicago showing how crime rates change further into the central city (transition zone had high crime rates)
Corporate crime
Pearce: “crimes of powerful” differ from wc and are usually larger scale and more to do with money
Croall:
- white collar crime: individuals abusing position (for example crimes against NHS where doctors claim millions by falsifying prescriptions)
- corporate crime: organisations trying to widen control/influence
