What is a Primary Crime Scene?
The area in the immediate vicinity of where the event occured.
What is a Secondary Crime Scene?
A scene not in the immediate vicinity of the main event but a location that may still afford evidence i.e. Location where a bank robber dumps the getaway car.
Define Inner Perimeter
An exclusion zone only accessed by the crime scene examiner and persons invited by the examiner.
Define Outer Perimeter
The outer extremity of the crime scene preventing all members of the public and others that do not have a need to be near the crime scene.
What to do with Witnesses and Victims at crime scenes
- RID -
R - Record their name, address and contact details.
I - Isolate to avoid contamination of recollection of events.
D - Detain where possible and with consent. Remember if it is an indictable offence then S. 11 LEPRA applies.
First Officer at the scene - things they do…
- Assess hazards
- Check for signs of life
- Determine crime scene nature and size
- Determine an entry point for scene (one not used by suspect)
- Remove all people via the entry
- Locate and note all witness particulars
- Call supervisor
- Call a forensic investigator/SOCO
- Define boundaries
- Protect evidence, record actions in notebook
- Record any changes to scene in notebook
- Prevent entry of people who are unauthorised
- Record logs in notebook, include Rank, Name, Station, Time of entry and exit, and reason for presence/task
- Provide Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) with all info before you leave
- Obtain SIO signature when you are relieved of recording duties.
What does EFIMS stand for?
