Crime Scene Sketch, Crime Scene Measuring, Crime Scene Exhibits Flashcards
What is the purpose of a crime scene sketch?
A record of the size and distance relationship of the crime scene and the evidence found within it
It clarifies information from photos and video, allowing the viewer to gauge distances and dimensions
What is a rough sketch?
Drawn at the scene, not the final version, typically done in pencil, not to scale
Done after photos and before anything is moved or altered
What must be included in a rough sketch?
Measurements for:
* Rooms
* Furniture
* Doors and windows
* Distances between objects
* Vehicles
* Roadways
Measurements must be accurate and taken from a fixed point of reference
What information should be included in a crime scene sketch?
Date, address/location, name of person who drew sketch, direction (heading), scale
Use exhibit numbers instead of writing out names on sketches
What are the three measurement methods used at a crime scene?
1) Triangulation method
2) Rectangular Co-ordinate method
3) Baseline method
Describe the triangulation method.
Utilizes two fixed permanent objects within the crime scene to measure from each fixed point to each piece of evidence
What is the rectangular co-ordinate method used for?
Measuring the distance to an object from two mutually perpendicular objects, useful for indoor scenes
How does the baseline method work?
Lay a tape measure in the scene (baseline) and measure exhibits/items off of baseline at right angles, useful for outdoor scenes
What is a final scene diagram?
A demonstrative aid, not evidence, used primarily for court purposes to assist with court proceedings
What factors dictate the search technique used at a crime scene?
Size and type of scene, what is being searched for, resources available, time and weather, area access
Parameters and boundaries need to be established prior to the search
What are the four main search techniques?
1) Line search
2) Grid search
3) Zone search
4) Spiral search
Describe the line search technique.
Searchers move in parallel along defined lanes in the same direction, suitable for outdoor areas or large indoor scenes
What is the grid search method?
Completing a line search in one direction and then in the opposite direction; thorough but time-consuming
What does a zone search involve?
Dividing an area into several adjacent zones; good for searching small objects
Can be done by one or more searchers
How does a spiral search work?
Searcher walks in a circular direction from the inside/outside to the outside/inside of the area to be searched
