What is crime scene?
- Place where the offence occurred or where the body was found, property or associated evidence was found
- The body itself in cases of homicide
- All people whether living or dead, who are associated with the offence may be considered as crime scene
- Any vehicles due by suspects
- Suspects themselves
- The victim and suspects home and work place
What is crime scene examination?
Uses physical evidence
Deductive and inductive reasoning to gain knowledge of the events surrounding the offence
If reconstructs what took place in a particular area and finds evidence connecting that activity to particular people, places and objects
Describe
1) hot zone
2) warm zone

1) that part of the scene requiring examination and evidence collection

What should you must complete prior to leaving the scene

Make contact with o/c investigation to ensure they are aware you are leaving the scene and have no further instructions for you prior to leaving
Ensure all uplifted exhibits are packaged and labelled correctly

Releasing the scene

Contact o/c investigation prior to leaving to ensure they are satisfied that there is nothing further to be done at the scene
the search warrant has been endorsed and if appropriate a copy should be left for the occupier with an inventory of what has been seized
Ensure scene log has been up lifted from the scene guard and they have been released

Sketch the body position, take photo and consider video
Consider marking the body position, consult with O/C scene
Record all details of the position of the body such as wounds, clothing, limb position
Assess the health risk that may come from moving the body
Take care to cover head , feet and hands with paper bag - secure with tape to prevent loss of trace evidence
Check clothing is not contaminated by contact of foreign objects
Have body wrapped in plastic sheet before placed in body bag
Carefully search underneath where the body laid
Retain all bags used to transport the body, they are exhibits
Obtain approval from OC investigation to move the body
When directed by OC investigation arrange contracted undertaker to remove the body to the mortuary
Ensure continuity and security of the body as an exhibit at all times
Duties at mortuary
Arrange formal identification of the body
Body remain in its present condition until the commencement of the postmortem
Ensure mortuary staff do not wash the body
Ensure the body is labelled and secured in the mortuary fridge
Retain any key used to secure the body until it is require for the postmortem
