Definition – A reconnaissance is the preliminary or survey made to get an overall picture of the scene without disturbing the evidence.
Making a reconnaissance 6 step process:
Steps of reconnaissance
- Gather information available; staff present, preliminary interviews, complainant, witnesses.
- Create a common approach pathway; overlook the whole area without touching or disturbing it; use stepping plates, protective clothing, look for offender route, points of entry/exit, seat of activity, extensions to scene, obvious evidence.
- Sketch the scene, briefly note anything of significance.
- Note anything effect evidence; weather / forensic/shoe prints
- Reconsider scene boundaries and examination proprieties
- Consider hot / warm / cold zones

Clear the people from the scene/take nothing/ containation
Order Witnesses/suspects to a clear area/stay with them
Not to discuss anything
Take witness/suspect to station to be interviewed
Rivals are kept apart
Obtain full particulars/preliminary interviews

Scene guard responsibilities
MR SCENE GUARD
Maintains a crime scene log; name designation authority to enter time in and out
Record all movements to and from the scene include vehicle reg
Scene- prevent aunorthorised entry to & from the scene
Communicate relevant info to OC scene or Crime Scene Cordinator
Ensure common approach path used visitors to be supervised
No discussion with by-standers or media
Ensure no disturbance -do not personally enter, contaminate, interfere with scene
Guard and protect scene prevent animals entering that may feed on evidence
Use courtesy with civilians, witnesses, crowds
Advise OC of actions taken
Relief- brief relieving scene guard and hand over log
Duty remain on duty until relieved
