What is formal control?
Authorities discourage nonconformity
Social control and the three levels
Social control encourages conformity, takes place in three levels, self control, informal social controls, and formal social controls
What is informal control?
Our friends and others reward us for conformity and punish us for non conformity
Define crime
A behavior that is subject to legal and civil punishment
What is victimless crimes
No clear victim, such as illegal supply and demand. Drug abuse gambling and porn are examples
What is white collar crimes?
Crimes committed by respectable people. Unreported and difficult to detect.
What is deviance?
Behavior people disapprove of and is relative to the audience
People’s feelings on crime?
They feel it’s gotten worse but it’s actually getting better.
4 Rationalizations for punishment:
- Retribution
- Prevention
- Deterrence
- Reform
Retribution
Society punishes offender to avenge victim
Define prevention:
Controlling offenders to keep them from committing more crime
Deterrence is:
Scaring previous offenders and non offenders from a life of crime
Reform is:
Building character skills encouraging criminals to be law abiding
