- “i will speak with no gimmicks”, talks up rask’s greatness and wants to convince him that he actually likes him
- says he suspected that rask. bcz of his article, detected his pride in his ideas and suspsected he might act them out
- says he searched his room, manipulated Raz. into sharing info to rask abt case, got ahold of “murderer!” stranger

-nikolay is part of religious group that embraces suffering

- knows he shouldnt arrest rask bcz that would look bad, but gives two days to confess on his free will anyways, says god might have a plan for him

- rask hurries to svid., avoiding sonya bcz of his need to confess, worries svid will report to police, and worries more that this knowledge will let him hurt dounia
- rask. spots svid in tavern window, invites rask. to join him
- svid’s face is almost too perfect, like a mask, svid says he has a passion for women and cheating at cards but wont hurt her
- rask” YOU SUCK I WILL LITERALLY KILL YOU LIKE THE PAWNBROKER IF YOU TRY TO SEE DUNYA AGAIN”
- svid. is like “dounia saved me from myself”

- Rask “ YOU RAPED A 14 YR OLD AND KILLED YOUR WIFE” and he evades, implies truth
- svid: open marriage kind of? allowed to sleep with servants but no love or long term affairs, especially above servants
- thru convo, svid details womanizing, deeply attracted to dunia until she confronted him abt raping a maid
- svid. tried to seduce dounia, make her believe she could save him, but she rejected
- svid offered all his money and to run away w/her or killed his wife if she asked
- svid. - i married a 15 yr old so no im not after dounia and also i love how she cuddles in my lap and i like “my sewers to be filthy” - rask : BRUH TF WHAT
- “you wont get away from me” svid says but rask follows after they leave

-rask follwos svid. to boardinghouse, suspicious of what he might do with dunya, svid. threatens to call the police and taunts rask. abt his crimes and hypocrisy on other ppls crimes
- svid annoyed, at not seeing dunya, brings up subject of murder (the taunt above) and calls him a romantic who objects at listening at doors but its ok to murder
- rask is disgusted, svid goes off on carriage, rask walks away but svid follows
- passes dounia, then svid signals to dounia to convince to come to his room to talk to sonya and other neighbors and hear abt “strange things” rask has done
- svid reveals crime and great man theory, suggests rask go to America
- dounia doesnt believe the murder part
-svid locked her in, says he can save her brother, then blackmails her brothers crime, then just outright threatens to rape her
- you cant talk to authorities w/o implicating your brother
- dounia pulls out revolver, accuses of poisoing marfa, svid dares to fire, fires, grazes scalp, misfires, svid would rather die than let himhergo
- “do you lvoe me now or could ever love me” “HELL NO” and svid is dejected, lets her go

- svid visits sonia, gives her 3000 rubles, says hes going to america, insists she takes money to follow rask to siberia, tell no one where the money came from?
- sonya is shocked, svid says he will tell no one
- svid gets a small room downstairs ina hotel, feels feverish, wondering if dounia could have actually made him better
- feverdreams, mouse runs over him,one of 14 yr old he raped, beautiful cottage covered in flowers, 5 yr old girl crying, puts in bed, horrified by scary face she made
- svid leaves hotel with revolver, approaches policeman, says “img oing to ameirca” and shoots himself

- rask claims he finally made up his mind, visits mother, shes read rask’s article and loves it!
- rask asks if mom will always love him, assures he loves her, goes down to kiss her feet and they cry together
- rask finally promises to come back the next day nad not leave
- rask goes home, finds dounia waiting, sees she knows everything, rask. opens up to her and admits to suicidal thoughts
- “im a vile man”, says he must now confess to the murder
- switches gears, murder wasnt a crime, rationalizes!
- questions whether its worth suffering in prison for his “crime”, lost faith in all people, sees he made his family suffer, tries to live a good life even thoa murderer
- kisses a portrait of his lost fiance, “had i never loved or been loved” he would not suffer, loathes all humankind
- “if only i were alone and no one loved me and i never loved anyone this wouldnt have happened!”

- sonya relieved to see rask. didnt commit suicide
- rask asks for cross, but then says it would be more fitting if he wore alyanas
- yells at sonya, says let me go alone to police, doesnt rlly want to go but feet keep moving, leaves without saying goodbye
- denies he loves her, rationalized that he wanted to see her suffer
- tries to avoid ppl, at hay market drawn to them tho, notices everything
- weeps and kisses filthy earth with bliss and rapture, weeping with joy, ppl laugh at him
- sonya secrety followed, rask. realizes she wll always be with him
- wants to confess to ilya petrovitch, talks nonstop, apologizes, svid suicide, rask leaves relieved of burdern of svid, sees sonya, goes back in, confesses
