-obsesses over lost money over marriage, revenge

• apparently kicked sonia out, despite praising her for being a prostitute and thus rebelleign against social rules
• luzhin wants to meet sonia, talks about arranging a fund for katerina, gives her 10 rubles, lebez goes wow you so humane

-katerina invites everyone, more lavish than she can pay for, even her landlady she hates, lebez. who beat her, and luzhin who is stranger

-rask attends funeral dinner, scene is darkly humorous instead of dignified

• most guests didnt even go to the funeral, some complete strangers
• katerina believes luzhin might help her get gov. pension, but he isnt there
• neighbors avoid due to sonia reputation, thsoe who have come only came for free food and drink and might steal silverware, no respect
• blames higher class lodgers not coming on landlady, more aggressive towards her blaming her for misfortune until a fight is just dodged

• Luzhin arrives at dinner, accuses sonai of stealing 100 rubles
• Katerina goes to prove her innocence, but a 100 ruble note comes out
• lebez shows up, calls out Luzhin slipping the note in secretly
• Raskol. helps lebez, says luzhin trying to embarass, make him look like he gave all his money to a prostitute, turn dounia against him, luzhin is taken back
• crowd turns against luzhin, someone throws glass at him, hits landlady instead
• landlady evicts katerina on the spot, rushes off, “children wait in the streets”
• rask goes to sonia’s place

• on way, debates confessing but knows he must
• “would you kill a bad man to save your family?” “who has made me a judge to decide who lives and dies, and gods plan? dummy”
• rask. confesses its abt himself and seeks forgiveness, anger,softens
• sonia realizes rask. murdered, is terrified, but then goes “what have you done to yourself” and “no one is so unhappy as you,” he asks her not to leave him
• rask implies he might not turn himself in, says he did it for the money and then a buncha other reasons but realizes he “killed for me and me alone” to find out if he was a louse or man
• stops short of full responsibility
• sonia: confess you need to go to prison and suffer (rask is like wtf dude) , and god will send you life again, you cannot live w/ your crime
• rask. is unnerved by sonia’s love and feels worse, rejects cross for later and goes to “meet his suffering”

-lebez. arrives from literally nowhere

• lebez. comes to sonia’s room, reports katerina has taken children into streets and went crazy, sonia goes out but rask. suddenly is repulsed by her and goes to roo,m

-dounia is like “ i know you cant be murderer, raz says youre being chased by popo, i dont blame you for leaving, if you need me im here”

• regrets making sonia suffer more, fears abt. confessing realized, and wishes he culd tell dounia
• feels lonelier than ever, wants to go to siberia without her
• rask. in streets feels impirsoned, lebez. stumbles upon him, they both see:
• katerina forcing kids to be street performers for money, police try to stop, katerina collapses from tuberculosis
• katerina brought to sonia’s, “god knows my sufferning and will forgive my sins, if he wont i dont care” and she dies
• svid. offer to help w/money meant for dounia, generous to sonia and family, then manipulative to rask., “a louse like some poor pawnbroker”, he overheard confession, “i told you that we should come together again”
