Justice
Taught by Allah & Qur’an, Muslims act fair, key idea, Shari’ah law strict on Justice, Five Pillars (like Zakah), important to Allah, intended, afterlife judged. Non-religious, supported (equality).
Crime
Action against state, problem. Qur’an: crime inappropriate conduct, live Allah’s rules, Allah commands justice, crime distraction, Ummah important, example of Muhammad, humans equal. Causes: poverty, politics, racism, drugs, alcohol, esteem, opinion. Example charity, Mosaic.
Good, evil and suffering
Clear teachings. Good: help, care, rewarded: al-Jammah. Evil: example crime, punishment: Jahannam. Evil responses: predestined, test, reminds sin, humans responsible, evil becomes good. Non-religious, free will, no afterlife, disproves God, natural evil exists.
Punishment and aims
In Western, courts decide. Islamic, Qur’an dictates law, refers to Shari’ah law. Example Shari’ah: theft = amputation of arm. Punishment serves justice, peace/stability in society. Maintains law & order, expected behaviour, victims safe. Aims: deterrence (prevents crime, maintains societal stability), protection (from society, justice), retribution (paying for crime, enables justice), reformation (chance to change, become better).
Forgiveness
Accepting apology. Islam: Allah compassionate & merciful, forgive repentance, religion of peace, Day of Judgement. For offenders: gain skills, reformation, make amends. Restorative, restores peace with involved.
Treatment of criminals
Fair treatment, humane way. Chance to reform. Shari’ah law, clear punishments. Torture forbidden. Human rights enforced, removal of some. Fair trial required, by jury.
Capital punishment
Executing someone, UK abolished. Purposes, punishment for severe crimes, deterrence, retribution, prevents reoffending, chance to repent. For: Qur’an says allowed sometimes, Muhammad supported. Against, not the only option, has strict conditions, life is sacred, not allowed to murder.
