Positive functions of crime
- boundary maintenance, unites people in condemnation of the wrongdoer and reinforces norms and values
- adaption and change, social change starts with an act of defiance
Evaluation for Durkheim
X- claims society requires a certain amount of deviance to function successfully but doesn’t offer a way of knowing how much is the right amount
X- claims crime serves as a positive function for society by reaffirming its values and promoting solidarity but ignores its negative effects on the victims
X- feminists would argue it be if it’s men and it’s there to control women
Hirschi
Attachment- extent to which we care about other people’s opinions and wishes
Commitment- personal investments and what we have to lose
Involvement- extent to which we are busy and if there are opportunities to be deviant/commit crime
Belief- our own sense of whether we should obey the rules of society
