What are causes of facial nerve palsy?
Lower motor Neuron:
Infective: Otitis media, Malignant otitis externa, HIV, Lyme’s disease, Herpes Zoster Virus (Ramsay Hunt Syndrome)
Systemic Disease: Diabetes, Sarcoidosis, Leukaemia, Multiple sclerosis, Guillain–Barré syndrome
Tumours: Acoustic neuroma, Parotid tumours, Cholesteatomas
Trauma: Direct nerve trauma, Damage during surgery, Base of skull fractures

Unilateral upper motor lesions occur in:
Cerebrovascular accidents (strokes)
Tumours
Bilateral upper motor neuron lesions are rare. They may occur in:
