As night deepened, I gradually drifted into a long-awaited peaceful sleep.
sprawling over bed - my phone lit up.
brightness engulfed room - stars in the night sky.
abrupt vibration pierced tranquillity - room, awakening me.
call - unknown number.
wondered who would possibly call me so late in the night.
I declined - call - turned around, preserving - serenity - room.
immediately after, another dent - quiet - room.
Another BZZZ! Erupted bedside table.
hesitantly answered call, driven by pure curiosity.
wanted - unveil - mysterious identity. surprise - frantic voice - woman - a woman who requested babysitting.
part 2
“Sorry, who are you, and how did you get my number?” I asked.
Replied - distant cousin. - straight back to her point.
She wanted - babysit three-year-old son.
told her kindly - didn’t work weekends but - said after - jaw drop. £10,000 night. I - stumbling over own words.
more than month’s wage; said yes without thinking.
gave - address & list rules, one rules stood out - most: ‘Do not open the basement’.
As she uttered those words, - palpable anxiety, even through - phone line.
An intense - foreboding washed over me.
However, I had no choice.

scrambled - apartment - car.
I navigated - tight meandering city street – packed - branches poking out like bear claws –reached end treacherous road. My eyes met - silhouette - mansion, moonlit sky. flood doubt washed - guts.
Each step nearer building - raised blood pressure;
sweat drenched my shirts, hands clammy.
risked - sanity and safety - thought - cash buzzing - forward.
And then a voice, emerged from nowhere. A familiar voice.

feral instinct - swing round see tall woman, stared - me.
malevolent eyes glowed - unsettling intensity.
hair = knotted and fibrous. complexion absorbed all light - her. hidden chord - connect me - strange and terrifying figure.
Without wanting near, compelled, drawn, hypnotised - her invisible strength.
walked - door. extended hand - witch; her hands = gnarled and bony.
told me - baby = upstairs - voice compassionless and cold - machine
part 5
Trembling - anticipated - worst - held - grasp.
Instead, let wrist drop - placed a soiled bag cash - doorstep.
thud - weight dispelled connection between us. She turned. And left.
Paralysed, I stared, wide eyed - space - thing - stood.
Above me, the roar - silent night rushed - head as I bent down, snatched sack, and ran.
Sat - car. Keys - ignition, foot - accelerator.
raced - blackness, wild thoughts screaming - brain: woman, child, cash…
caught glimpse my face -rear-view mirror.
smile stretched lips wide, smile sinner.
