Creation of performance Flashcards
What were the 3 steps to creating the process
- Historical Research
- Emotional Understanding
- Physicality
What was the motivation behind doing historical research?
All my songs were based around historical events, so i wanted to make sure I understood the environment the character was in and knew the things the character would know
What was the most difficult thing to achieve in the performance?
Differentiating the characters
What historical research was done for Tony and how was that implemented into the performance
Reading up on what life in new york was like post war and the discovering the impact suburbanisation had on new york. implemented through understanding more about the situation Tony was in and understanding why he was so desperate to get out of it
what historical research was done for Chris
reading articles about the life of soldiers in the vietnam war and finding things out about who wa most likely to go out there and why to try and understand Chris, finding out what kind of life Chris is likely ot have led.
how was history a research implemented into why god, why
the idea that chris would’ve been raised in a stable environment made the situation in the piece more difficult for him. also like prosperity nad stuff
historical research for jack
looking into policing and life in new york in the late 1800s, helped. to implement jack’s dramatic reaction to the events and his difficulty to breathe - its hot.
what was the motivation behind doing emotional understanding
ive always believed that every emotion ever felt is different, as each one has always had different specific contexts leading up to it, so i wanted ot understand exactly what each character was feeling.
how did you try and emotionally understand the characters
lyrical analysis and the watching of the shows, as well as doing in depth character studies for each character to try and really delve into their psyches.
how was lyrical analysis particularly helpful in why god why
its very metaphorical and abstract a lot for the time, so understanding what each specific line meant meant i was able to draw some really interesting conclusions about. the emotions Chris goes through in that song.
2 examples of implementing lyrical analysis into performances
‘high’ in why god why
‘need’ in miss saigon.
how did emotional understanding massively contribute to the performances?
movement
my method for blocking movement was to get into character and just start performing, just moving with the song whilst being the character to try and see what they would do
i kept a track of what i did and didnt like and would redo it with what i liked trying to find really character based actions
in-character improvsation!!
what was my motivation for altering bits of my costume
- to help the audience understand each character and just make. them that little bit more distinct
- to help me get into character and feel on my body what i think that character would’ve been feeling.
what 3 parts of costume did i alter for each performance
hat
braces
sleeves
