What was the Marshall Plan?
Set up by the USA in order to give economic help to European countries to keep them capitalist and stop spread of communism
After the War how was Germany Split?
Split into 4 zones, USA, UK, FRANCE and USSR. Berlin was also split into these sectors
What was trizonia?
Britain and USA united to form biozone and then France joined to form trizonia, 3 allies who were all capitalist. USSR was not involved as they were communist.
What did trizonia do which instigated their separation from the USSR into the Federal Republic of Germany?
They formed a single economic unit to give financial aid from the Marshall plan and forming a new currency .This broke the agreement on economic unity across all the zones therefore soviet reacted by enforcing the original currency leading to the Berlin Blockade.
What was the Berlin Blockade?
The Blockade of Berlin was carried out by Stalin. As Berlin was in the soviet zone he cut off all communications and transport to Berlin in order to express their anger at trizone for creating new currency and this led to the Berlin Airlift
What was the Berlin Airlift?
Allies had to fly in supplies to Berlin to provide people with food and other resources. It was a major success and this was the final straw in segregating the 2 into East and West Germany
What did Trizone become?
It became the Federal Republic Of Germany setting out basic laws and the Soviet Zone became GDR
What were the basic laws?
Promised equality for all and repressed extremism. Within the constitution reunification was allowed
How was the FRG government set up?
The FRG set up a government similar to that of Weimar.
Head of State - President was elected every 5 years
Bundestag - Law making body
Bundesrat - Representatives from the Lander which is the local government
Chancellor and Ministers to administer these laws
How was FRG denazified?
Nuremberg Trials - These were war crime trials where many Nazis were sent to prison
The youths were educated to rid them of the Nazi ideology
Visits to concentration camps to show them the evil nature of the Nazi’s
Banned Nazi schoolbooks, films and the ideology
Teachers vetted to find Nazi students
