What was agreed at the Yalta Conference?
stalin agreed to join the war against the japanese.
germany was to be split into four zones each controlled by either the USSR, USA, france and britain.

What was Potsdam?
May 1945 three months after Yalta allied troops reached Berlin. Hitler suicide Germany surrendered. July 1945 in Berlin suburb Potsdam another conference was called.
Soviet troops liberated many eastern European countries but then just stayed there. He set up a communist government in Poland to the objection of Britain and France but he insisted that it was purely for defense
What was agreed at Potsdam?
- to set up the four ‘zones of occupation’ in Germany. The Nazi Party, government and laws were to be destroyed, and ‘German education shall be so controlled as completely to eliminate Nazi and militarist doctrines and to make possible the successful development of democratic ideas.
- to bring Nazi war-criminals to trial.
- to recognize the Polish Provisional Government of National Unity and hold ‘free and unfettered elections as soon as possible’.
- Russia was allowed to take reparations from the Soviet Zone, and also 10% of the industrial equipment of the western zones as reparations. America and Britain could take reparations from their zones if they wished.
- Germans living in Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia to be sent back.
