Crave the Wave 2015 Flashcards
Crest
The highest point of a wave, it’s also called the peak.
Trough
The lowest point of a wave.
Rest Position
The position a wave would be in if there were no obstacles.
Wavelength
The distance between two troughs or two crests.
Amplitude
The distance between a crest or trough and the rest position.
Frequency
The number of times a wavelength passes a point in one second.
Period
The time it takes a wave to complete a wavelength.
Seismic Wave
Waves that occur during earthquakes.
P-Waves
These waves are primary waves and arrive first in an earthquake. They are longitudinal waves and can travel through liquids.
S-Waves
These waves are secondary waves and arrive second in an earthquake. They are transverse waves and cannot travel through liquids.
Surface Waves
A combination of S and P Waves that occur on the surface. However, these are the slowest.
Love Waves
A surface wave that moves side to side. Causes the most destruction.
Rayleigh Waves
A surface wave that rolls in an ocean-like motion.
