Parietal bone
Two bones that form the roof and sides of the cranium
Frontal bone
Gives shape to the forehead, the eye sockets, and part of the nose
Occipital
Back of the skull and the base of the cranium
Foramen magnum - opening in the occipital bone, allows the spinal cord to pass into the skull and join the brain
Temporal bones
- Sides of the cranium near the temples
- contains- external auditory meatus, mandibular fossa, mastoid process, styloid process
External auditory meatus
The opening to ear canal
Mandibular fossa
Articulates with mandible,lower jaw
Mastoid process
Provides a place for neck muscles to join your head
Styloid process
Serves as an attachment site for muscles of the tongue and voice box
Ethmoid bone
Contains several sections, called plates, most of which form the nasal cavity
Sphenoid bone
- Shaped like a butterfly or a saddle
- forms the floor of the cranium and the sides of the sockets
- consist of sella turcica- central sunken portion that shelters pituitary gland
Facial bones

Sinuses
- the frontal sinus
- mastoid sinuses
- maxillary sinuses
- paranasal sinuses
