What is Neurocranium?
Bony case of the brain and its membranous coverings, the cranial meninges made by eight cranial bones.
What are parts of Neurocranium?
Calvarium (Skullcap)
Cranial base or Basicranium
What are the parts of calvaria?
Frontal
Parietal
Occipital
By which type of ossification is calvarium formed?
Intramembranous ossification
What bones form the cranial base?
Sphenoid, Temporal, and Occipital bones
By which type of ossification is the cranial base formed?
Endochondral ossification
What is a suture?
A fibrous type of joint only in the skull
It allows little movement which contributes to compliance and elasticity.
What is Viscerocranium?
It is the facial skeleton having 14 or 15 bones
How is viscerocranium formed?
It is formed from the mesenchyme of the embryonic pharyngeal arches
What are pneumatized bones?
These bones contain large sinuses or air spaces. They decrease the weight of the bones.
What normal factor increases the volume of air in the sinus?
As we age, the volume increases
Name the examples of pneumatized bones
Frontal, temporal, sphenoid, and ethmoid bone.
What is the orbitomeatal plane or Frankfort horizontal plane?
A horizontal line from the inferior margin of the orbit and the superior margin of the external acoustic opening of the external acoustic meatus.
