Scaphocephaly
Hint: “Scapho-” meaning boat
Premature closure of sagittal suture
= long, narrow wedge
Microcephaly
Small cranium due to abnormal development of brain. Fontanelles close in infancy. Sutures close in the first year.
What is the closing of sutures in the fontanelles from early timing to late?
1-3 months after birth: Posterior and Anteriolateral fontanelles
12 months old: Posteriolateral fontanelle
2 years old: Anterior fontanelle
Plagiocephaly
Hint: “Plagio-“ meaning oblique
Premature closure of coronal suture on one side only
= twisted, asymmetrically high tower
Trigonocephaly
Hint: “Trigon” meaning triangle
Premature closure of frontal suture
= permanent midline ridging
(Think: triangle forehead shape when superior and directly down on head)
Brachycephaly
Hint: “Brachy-“ meaning short

= high tower
