A benign tumor that arises in the sellar/suprasellar region
From what embryological structure is a craniopharyngioma derived?
Rathke’s pouch remnants
What are the two peak age groups for craniopharyngioma incidence?
5-15 years and the 6th-7th decades
How does a craniopharyngioma typically grow?
It is slow-growing, often cystic, and may calcify
What are two common symptoms of craniopharyngioma?
Headaches and visual disturbances
How can craniopharyngioma affect the pituitary gland?
It can compress the pituitary, leading to hypopituitarism and hormonal imbalances
What symptom might be seen in children with craniopharyngioma?
Growth retardation due to hormonal deficits
What imaging modalities are used to diagnose craniopharyngioma?
CT or MRI of the head
What is the primary treatment for craniopharyngioma?
Surgical resection plus radiotherapy
What is the prognosis for craniopharyngioma, especially if <5 cm?
Excellent prognosis
What rare condition may develop after radiation therapy for craniopharyngioma?
Secondary malignant transformation (SSC, but rare)
