Craning Terms Flashcards
What is the load?
The combined weight of everything mounted or stowed on the boom and anything hanging from the boom tip
Gross load
The weight of attachments, rigging, and whatever is on the hook
Net load
The weight of the piece being lifted
Static load
The weight of the gross load when the load is stationary
Dynamic load
Is caused by a sudden change in speed of the lift and attachments, sudden stopping when booming or cabling
Shock load
Sudden or unexpected load on the lifting system
Safe working load formula
UBS ultimate breaking strength divided by the safety factor= SWL
Crane center of gravity
The combined weight and location of: boom carrier and upper works
Load center of gravity
Is when the hook is directly over the loads center of gravity, sling attachment point must be over load center of gravity
Stowed jib
Jib or boom extension is not in use and pinned to the side of the boom
Stored jib
When jib or boom extension is stored off of the crane
Assist crane
A crane used to assist assembling or disassembling a crane
Blocking (Cribbing)
Wood or other material used to support equipment or a component and distribute loads to the ground, typically used to support lattice boom sections during assembly/disassembly and under out rigger and stabilizer floats
Boom angle indicator
A device which measured the horizontal angle of the boom
Boom length indicator
Indicates the length of the permanent part of the boom and length of the boom with extensions/attachments
Boom stop
Restricts the the boom from moving above certain maximum angles and toppling over backwards
Boom suspension system
A system of pendants, running ropes sheaves, and other hardware which supports boom tip and controls boom angle
Competent person
One who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them
Controlling entity
An employer that is a prime contractor, general contractor, construction manager or any other legal entity which has the overall responsibility for the construction of the project
Counterweight
A weight used to supplement the weight of equipment in providing stability for lifting loads by counterbalancing those loads
Crawler crane
Equipment that has a type of base mounting which incorporates a continuous belt of sprocket driven tracks
Crossover points
Locations on a wire rope which is spoiled on a drum where one layer of rope climbs up and crosses over the previous layer. This takes place at the flange of the drum as the rope is spooled onto the drum, reaches the flange and begins to wrap back in the opposite direction
Dedicated channel
A line of communication assigned by the employer who controls the communication system to only one signal person and crane/Derrick or to a coordinated group of cranes, derricks, signal person
Dedicated spotter(power lines)
The spotters sole responsibility is to watch the separation between the power line and the equipment, load line and load and ensure that the applicable minimum approach distance is not breached
Directly under load
A part or all of an employee is directly beneath the load
Encroachment
Is there any part of the crane load line or load breaches a minimum clearance distance that this subpart requires to be maintained from a powerline
Fall zone
The area in which it is reasonably Foreseeable that partially or completely suspended materials could fall in the event of an accident
Flange points
Are the points of contact between rope and drum flanges where the rope changes layers
Free fall of load line
Only the brake is used to regulate the decent of the load line
List
The angle of inclination about the longitudinal axis of a barge, pontoon, vessel or other means of flotation
Load
The objects being hoisted/weight of the objects, includes rigging and attachments
LMI load moment indicator
A system which aids the equipment operator be sensing the overturning moment on the equipment
Operational aids
Devices that assist the operator in the safe operation of the crane by providing information or automatically taking control of a crane function
Pendants
a fixed length of wire rope or bar with mechanical fitting at both ends for pinning segments or wire rope together.
Qualified person
A person who buy possession of a recognize degree, certificate, or professional, standing, or who, by extensive knowledge, training and experience successfully, demonstrated the ability to solve or resolve problems relating to the subject matter the work or the project
Rated capacity
The maximum working load permitted by the manufacturer
Reeving
A rope system in which the rope travels around drums or sheaves
Side loading
A load applied at an angle to the vertical plane of the boom
Upperworks/superstructure/upper structure
The revolving frame of equipment on which the operating machinery are mounted along with the operators cab. The counterweight is typically supported on the rear of the upper structure and boom or other front end attachment is mounted on the front
Trim
Angle of inclination about the transverse axis of a barge, pontoon, or vessel
Two blocking
A condition in which a component that is uppermost on the hoist line, such as the load block, hook Block overhaul ball or similar component comes in contact with the boom tip, fixed upper block or similar component. This binds the system and continued application of power can cause failure of the hoist rope or other component.
Types of cranes
Lattice boom and hydraulic boom
