Cranial Nerves Functions Flashcards
CN I (olfactory)
provides sense of smell
CN II (optic)
provides sense of vision
CN III (oculomotor)
gives: eye movement accommodation eyelid opening pupillary constriction
CN IV (trochlear)
provides eye motor movements through the superior oblique muscle:
abducts
depresses
internally rotates
CN V (trigeminal)
innervates three sections of face:
facial sensation (sensory)
mastication (motor)
provides secretions of the mouth and nasal cavities
CN VI (abducens)
abducts eye to look away from the nose through contraction of the lateral rectus muscle
CN VII (facial)
provides for facial motor and sensory perception:
lacrimation
salivation
taste of anterior 2/3 of tongue (sensory)
facial movement (motor)
stapedius muscle (stabilizes stapes to wall of ear)
eyelid closing
CN VIII (vestibulocochlear)
provides for sense of hearing and balance
CN IX (glossopharyngeal)
Sensory:
- taste of posterior 1/3 of tongue
- monitoring carotid body and sinus
Motor:
-acts on the sylopharyngeus to move the larynx/pharynx during swallowing
Salivation
CN X (vagus)
Sensory:
- aortic arch chemoreceptors and baroreceptors
- taste of epiglottic region
Motor:
- swallowing
- palate elevation
- talking
- coughing
- midline uvula
CN XI (accessory)
head turning
shoulder shrugging
CN XII (hypoglossal)
tongue movement
