Cranial Nerves Flashcards
CN 1
olfactory nerve - supplies area of nose and has special sensory function of smell
CN II
optic nerve - special sensory - allows vision from retina
CN III
occulomotor nerve - supplies muscles around (outside) eyeball. muscle movements of eye e.g moves it up down, side to side
CN IV
trochlear nerve - supplies one single muscle (superior oblique) which moves eye down and outwards
CN V
trigeminal - 3 branches motor and sensory functions
CN V1
opthalmic branch of trigeminal - general sensory of cornea, skin of forehead, scalp , eyelids and nose
CN V2
maxillary branch of trigeminal - general sensory of upper lip, maxillary teeth and sinuses
CN V3
mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve - motor function to muscles of mastication , general sensory to sides of mandible, mandibular teeth, mucosa of mouth and anterior 2/3 of tongue
CN VI
Abducents nerve - supplies one single muscle (lateral rectus) - moves eye outwards and away from nose
LR6 SO4
lateral rectus = 6, superior oblique = 4, rest of eye muscle = 3
CN VII
facial nerve - supplies muscles of facial expression, taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue, supplies submandibular and sublingual salivary
what gland does CN VII run through
parotid gland
CN VIII
vestibulocochlear nerve - responsible for hearing and balance
CN IX
glossopharyngeal nerve
- somatic motor to stylopharyngeus (moves pharynx up)
- parasympathetic innervation to parotid gland
- taste to posterior 1/3 of tongue
CN X
vagus nerve - rest and digest
abdominal organs, required for swallowing and talking
CN XI
accessory nerve - supplies trapezius (raises shoulders) and sternocleidomastoid (moves head side to side)
CN XII
hypoglossal nerve - supplies muscles of the tongue
How do you test the hypoglossal nerve
sticking tongue out
how do you test the trigeminal nerve
touching random areas of the face in different branch regions
