V. Trigeminal
Axons: somatic sensory and somatic motor
Fxns: sensation of touch to the face and movement of muscles of mastication (chewing)
VI. Abducens
Axons: somatic motor
Fxn: movements of the eye
VII. Facial
Axons: somatic sensory and special sensory
Fxns: movement of muscles of facial expression and sensation of taste in anterior two-thirds of the tongue
VIII. Auditory-vestibular
Axons: special sensory
Fxn: sensation of hearing and balance
IX. Glossopharyngeal
Axons: somatic motor, visceral motor, special sensory, visceral sensory
Fxns: movement of muscles in the throat (oropharynx); parasympathetic control of the salivary glands; sensation of taste in posterior one-third of the tongue; detection of blood pressure changes in the aorta
X. Vagus
Axons: visceral motor; visceral sensory; somatic motor
Fxns: parasympathetic control of the heart, lungs, and abd organs; sensation of pain associated with viscera; movement of muscles in the throat (oropharynx)

Fxn: movement of muscles in the throat and neck
XII. Hypoglossal
Axons: somatic motor
Fxn: movement of the tongue
