I Olfactory
Infant: difficult to test
Children: identifies smells thru each nostril
II Optic
Infant: looks at face and tracks eyes
Children: intact visual acuity, peripheral vision, color vision
III Oculomotor
Infant: blinks in response to light, has pupils that are reactive to light
Children: no nystagmus and PERRLA is intact
IV Trochlear
Infant: looks at face and tracks with eyes
Children: looks down and in with eyes
V Trigeminal
Infant: rooting and sucking reflexes
Children: clench teeth, detects touch on face with eyes closed
VI Abducens
Infant: looks at face and tracks with eyes
Children: sees laterally
VII Facial
Infant: symmetric facial movements
Children: differentiate between salty and sweet on tongue, symmetric facial movements
VIII Acoustic
Infant: tracks sound, blinks in response to loud noise
Children: no experience with vertigo, intact hearing
IX Glossopharyngeal
Infant: intact gag reflex
Children: intact gag reflex, taste sour on back of tongue
X Vagus
Infant: no difficulties swallowing
Children: speech clear, no difficulties swallowing, uvula is midline
XI Spinal Accessory
Infant: moves shoulders symmetrically
Children: equal strength of shoulder shrug against examiner’s hands
XII Hypoglossal
Infant: no difficulties swallowing, opens mouth when nares occluded
Children: midline tongue, move tongue in all directions with equal strength against tongue blade resistance
