Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What is cranial nerve II?
What are the tests for it?
Optic nerve
- visual
- tests: visual acuity, visual fields, pupillary light reflex (CN II and III), accommodation reaction
What is cranial nerve I?
What is the test for it?
Olfactory
-sense of smell
Test 1: examiner presents aromatic substances, one at a time, under patient nose
What is cranial nerve IV?
What are the tests used for it?
Trochlear
- oblique muscles of the eye
- test: eye motions (same as CN III)
What is cranial nerve III?
What are the tests used for it?
Oculomotor -muscles of the eye -tests: eye motions Pupillary light reflex Accommodation reaction
What is cranial nerve V?
What are the tests used for it?
Trigeminal
-tests: sensation to the face, corneal reflex, muscles of mastication, jaw jerk reflex
What is cranial nerve VI?
What are the tests for it?
Abducens
-test: eye motions (same as CN III and IV)
What is cranial nerve VII?
What are the tests for it?
Facial
- motor innervated for the muscles of the facial expression
- tests: muscles of facial expression (orbicularis oculi, frontalis, zygomatic major, orbicularis oris, platysma), taste: anterior 2/3 of the tongue, corneal reflex
What is cranial nerve VIII?
What are the tests for it?
Vestibulocochlear
Testing cochlear component: gross hearing examination, rinne test
Testing vestibular component: nystagmus, past pointing
What is cranial nerve IX?
What are the tests for it?
Glossopharyngeal
-tests: gag reflex (CN IX and X)
What is cranial nerve X?
What is the test for it?
Vagus
-test: palatal elevation: looking at palate and uvula when saying “aww”, gag reflex
What is cranial nerve XI?
What are the tests for it?
Accessory
-tests: trapezius muscle (upper trap), SCM
What is cranial nerve XII?
What is the test for it?
Hypoglossal
-test: examination of symmetry of the tongue (spit tongue out)
What are the muscles and eye motions for direction of pull for CN III?
- medial rectus = medially
- superior rectus = upwards
- inferior rectus = downwards
- inferior oblique = up and out
- if it is paralyzed then the motion seen will be the opposite
What are the muscles and eye motions for direction of pull for CN IV?
- superior oblique = down and out
* if it is paralyzed then the motion seen will be the opposite
What are the muscles and eye motions for direction of pull for CN VI?
- lateral rectus = laterally
* if it is paralyzed then the motion seen will be the opposite
