Cranial Nerves Flashcards
CN II (Optic)
Sight, pupillary reflex (afferent)
Damage: monocular blindness, loss of pupillary constriction, absence of blink reflex
CN I (Olfactory)
Smell
Anosmia (loss of smell)
CN III (Occulomotor)
Moves the eye and elevates the upper eyelid; constricts pupil
Damage: ptosis, dilation of pupil, loss of the accommodation of the light reflex
CN IV (Trochlear)
Motor function for superior oblique muscle
Damage: diploplia, and failure to move eye up and out
CN V (Trigeminal)
Mastication, and sensory nerve for the head
Damage: loss of facial sensation, weakness of muscles of mastication, deviation of opened jaw to ipsilateral side
CN VI (Abducens)
Abducts the eye via nerve supply to lateral rectus muscle
Damage: diploplia, convergent squint (medial strabismus), and abductor paralysis of ipsilateral eye
CN VII (Facial)
Facial expression, speech articulation, winking, ingestion of food and drink, taste, salivary and nasal secretions
CN VIII (vestibulocochlear)
Maintenance of equilibrium, hearing
Damage: vertigo, nystagmus, dysequillibrium, tinnitus, loss of hearing
CN IX (Glossopharyngeal)
Elevates pharynx, salivary seceration, taste
Damage: slight dysphagia, partial dry mouth, loss of taste in posterior 1/3 of tongue
CN X (vagus)
Phonation, visceral sensations and reflexes, cardiac depressor, bronchoconstrictor, GI tract peristalsis and secretion
Damage: Palpitations, tachycardia, vommiting, slowing of respirations, ipsilateral paralysis of of soft palate and larynx, hoarseness, anesthesia of the larynx
CN XI (Spinal accessory)
Deglutition and phonation (carotid Part), movements of head and neck
CN XII (Hypoglossal)
Movements of the tongue
Damage: unilateral paralysis of the tongue, deviation to teh ipsilateral side with protrusion
