Describe the optic nerve
Atypical nerve
Sensory nerve
What do you do to assess optic nerve function in visual system exam?
Test visual acuity using a snellen’s chart.
Test for colour vision.
Do a fundoscopy to view optic nerve
Describe the oculomotor nerve.
Mixed modality nerve. Has both somatic and autonomic fibres
Which muscles does CN3 supply?
Superior rectus Inferior rectus Medial rectus Inferior oblique Levator palpabrae superioris
How do you assess CN3 function on a visual system exam?
Measure visual fields using a H movement
Describe the trochlear nerve.
Somatic motor nerve.
Emerges from dorsal aspect of midbrain.
What does the trochlear nerve innervate? What symptoms are present of there is damage to the nerve?
Superior oblique.
If damaged will have double vision on descending stairs.
Describe the abducens nerve.
Somatic motor nerve.
Longest intracranial course.
What does the abducens nerve innervate? What symptoms are present of there is damage to the nerve?
Innervates the lateral rectus muscle.
If damaged the patient is unable to look outwards.
