VIII; occlude one ear and whisper near the opposite ear, assess patients gait

IX; patient says “ah” to observe upward movement of soft palate, gag reflex, ability to swallow
testing vagus nerve
X; swallow and speak

XI; shrug and turn head against force
testing hypoglossal
XII; protrude tongue and move laterally
