The key nerve controlling eye movements
CN(IV)
Trochlear (IV)
Controls a single eye muscle
CN(V)
Trigeminal (V) largest CN
Motor – muscles of mastication
Sensory – facial sensation
Opthalmic branch (sensory)

Mandibular branch (mixed)
CN(VI)
Abducens (VI)
Eye movement
CN(VII)
Facial nerve (VII)
Sensory: taste receptors on anterior 2/3 tongue
Motor: Muscles of facial expression
Facial nerves split into 5 branches:
Temporal, zygomatic, buccal, mandibular and cervical
CN(VIII)
Vestibulocochlear (VIII)
Sensory:
Balance (vestibular branch)
Hearing (cochlear branch)
CN(IX)
Glossopharyngeal (IX)
Mixed (sensory and motor) to head and neck
Sensory:
-pharynx and soft palate
-Taste sensation from posterior 1/3 of tongue
Motor-stylopharyngeus muscle involved in swallowing & innervates the parotid gland
CN(X)
Vagus (X) (wandering)
Sensory: part of the pharynx, ear, diaphragm and some major organs
Motor: Muscles of palate, pharynx, digestive, respiratory and cardiovascular systems
CN(XI)
Accessory (XI)
Motor to muscles of neck and upper back
CN(XII)
Hypoglossal (XII)
Motor (tongue movements)
Damage to which CN cause dysphagia
CN IX -Glossopharyngeal
CN X- Vagus
