Cranial Nerve VII facial nerve Flashcards
cranial nerve 7 facial nerve functions?
- branchial motor input to muscles of facial expression in scalp, eyebrow, eyelids & cheek
- sensory information of taste
- visceral motor - parasympathetic input to stimulate secretion i.e nasal, lacrimal glands
both the branchial motor & visceral motor project?
from the brainstem to the ipsilateral side
the motor branch travels into__?
internal auditory meatus through geniculate ganglion
cranial nerve 7 & 8 can be damaged together because?
CN 8 also passes thru the internal auditory meatus so can be damages together at this site
CNVII motor branch issues can result in
paralysis of face and hearing defects
CN VII motor branch continues thru ____ and emerges from ____?
continues through facial canal and emerges from stylomastoid foramen
in terms of a CNVII lesion what is more worrisome?
if less of the face is affected which is due to supranuclear lesion ( upper motor neuron)
upper face sparing indicates a supranucelar lesion because
upper motor neurons innervating lower face project contra laterally
see slide 15 in notes to review more of this lesion info
