Cranial Nerve Modalities Flashcards
Cranial Nerve II
Optic
Special Sense
(sight)
Cranial Nerve III
Oculomotor
Visceral Motor - pupil constriction and commodation
Somatic Motor - eye movement
Cranial Nerve IV
Trochlear
Somatic Motor - eye movement (superior oblique muscle of eye movement)
Cranial Nerve V
Trigeminal
General Sensory - Facial sensation, external aspect of TM and sensation of tongue and teeth
Branchial Motor - Muscles of mastication, mylohoid, anterior belly of digastric, and “tensor muscles”
Cranial Nerve VI
Abducens
Somatic Motor - Eye Movement (lateral rectus muscle)
Cranial Nerve VII
Facial Nerve
Special Sensory - taste for anterior 2/3s of the tongue
General Sensory - ear
Branchial Motor - muscles of facial expression
Visceral Motor - (think parasympathetics of CN VII) - lacrimal gland, submandibular gland, sublingual gland, mucous production nose and mouth.
Cranial Nerve VIII
Vestibulocochlear
Special Sense - hearing and balance
Cranial nerve IX
Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Branchial Motor - supply striated muscle of the stylopharyngeus (muscle by ear)
Visceral Motor - (think parasympathetics) supply otic ganglion which sends fibers to stimulate the parotid gland
Visceral Sensory - carries sensation from the carotid body and from the carotid sinus
General Sensory - sensation from the posterior one third of the tongue, skin of the external ear and internal surface of tympanic membrane (gag reflex when poked in ear)
Special Sensory - taste from posterior one-third
Cranial Nerve X
Vagus Nerve
Branchial Motor - to striated muscles of the pharynx, tongue, and larynx (except stylopharyngeus CN IX and tensor veli palati CN V)
Visceral Motor - To smooth muscle of glands, pharynx, larnyx, and thoracic, and abdominal viscera.
Visceral Sensory - (think parasympathetics) from the larynx, trachea, esophagus, and thoracic abdominal viscera, stretch receptors in the walls of the aortic arch, chemoreceptors in the aortic bodies and adjacent to the arch.
General Sensory - from the skin and the back of the ear and in the external acoustic meatus part of the external surfaces of the tympanic membrane and the pharynx.
Cranial Nerve XI
Accessory Nerve
Branchial Motor - supply sternomastoid and trapezius (turning head and shoulder shrug)
Cranial Nerve XII
Hypoglossal
Somatic Motor - supply intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue (except palatoglossus CN X)
Cranial Nerve I
Olfactory
Special Sense
Smell
