Cranial Nerve Flashcards
Cranial nerve 1-olfactory
olfactory nerve- sense of smell
From cerebrum
Sensory only
Pathology- lack of sense of smell because of head injuries
Cranial nerve 2- optic nerve
Optic nerve-comes receptors in retina- goes from front of head to brain from cerebrum
Purely sensory
Carries visual images when they have been changed electrically to the brain
Pathology- sphenoid bone issues cause retinal tumours
Cranial Nerve 3- Occulomotor Nerve
Motor, sensory and autonomic from midbrain
Motor- MR, SR,IR, IO AND LP
Autonomic- accommodation, pupil constriction / dilation
pathology, double vision, accommodation loss
Cranial Nerve- 4
Trochlear Nerve from midbrain Sensory and motor Sensory- proprioceptors for SO Motor- innervates SO
Cranial Nerve 5-Trigeminal
brainstem Sensory- facial skin , face Motor- chewing eating Senior pain from face and head motor for chewing Trauma- chewing compromised
Cranial Nerve 6- Abducens
from brainstem
sensory and motor- provides lateral rectus
pathology- inability to move eye laterally
Cranial Nerve 7- Facial
Sensory- taste. buds fron 2/3 , facial muscles
motor- face, neck, scalp
Autonomic- tears and spit production
Pathology- bells palsy- decreased salivation inability to close eye comes from PONS OF BRAINSTEM
Cranial Nerve 8- vetsibulochoclear
pons and medulla
Vestibule- balance
Choclear- hearing
vestibular sensory- inner ear, sense of position and movement
Chochlear sensory- hearing
Pathology- trauma- loud noise-hearing loss, tinitis
cranial nerve 9- glossopharyngeal
medulla
Tongue taste buds in back1/3/ throat/ swallowing muscles
motor- swallowing muscles
autonomic- salivation
pathology- jugular foramen tumour- absent gag reflex, pain whilst swallowing
Cranial nerve 10- Vagus nerve
pons and medulla
sensory- taste buds in throat, neck
motor- coughing, speech , swallowing
autonimic- airways, stomach intestine, digestion heart rate
pathology- tumours laryngeal branch, gag reflex, digestive abnormalities
cranial nerve 11- spinal accessory nerve
medulla and spinal cord
control of movement of head and shoulders and head movement
-Cranial Nerve 12- hypoglossal nerve
medulla
tongue muscles
