Autonomic Nervous system Flashcards
Parasympathetic
Digest and Rest system
Preganglions longer than post ganglion neutrons
Preganglionic - brainstem and in lateral grey matter of 2nd through 4th sacral segments of spinal cord. Cranial parasympathetic outflow through cranial nerves 3,7,9,10
Preganglion usually synapse with 4-5 post ganglion
rest and digest response, conserve and restore body energy
Sympathetic
Fight or flight
Preganglionic- lateral horns of grey matter in 12 thoracic and first 2 or 3 lumbar segments of spinal cord
preganglion shorter than post ganglion
Preganglion synapse with 20 plus postganglionic
Pupil dilation, increase heart rate , increase stress
autonomic neurons- Cholinergic
Cholinergic - acetylcholine
-in sympathetic and parasympathetic preganglionic
-sympathetic postganglionic that innervate sweat glands
-all parasympathetic postganglionic neurons
Two types of receptor- nicotinic or muscarinic
Adregenic
releases norepinephrine - mostly all sympathetic postganglionic neurons
two types of receptors- beta and alpha receprors- alpha reduce use, beta increase use
General ANS
regulated by hypothalamus
crucial to maintaining homeostasis , involved almost all functions of body
Autonomic tone - balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity
