cracking Flashcards
what does cracking do ?
produce alkene/converts longer hydrocarbons into shorter ones
why doe we want alkenes ?
highly reactive and makes many products
what is the economical advantage of cracking ?
crude oil tends to have alot of long chain so their is not enough fuel .
what does thermal cracking produce ?
both shorter chain alkanes and alkenes and hydrogen but a high percentage of alkenes
what condition do thermal cracking take place under ?
high temp(450-900) and pressure (70 atm )
what does each molecule have when they split ?
a free radical
what conditions does catalytic cracking occur under ?
high temp of 450 but doesn’t require an high pressure
what type of catalyst does catlytic cracking have ?
zeolite catalyst
what is a zeolite catlyst ?
contains a mixture of alumunium oxide and silicon dioxide
does a zeolite catalyst have a small or large surface
large
what does catlyic cracking produce usualy ?
branch chain alkanes and cyclo alkanes and aromantic hydrocarbon
why are the products of catlytic cracking useful ?
useful for petral
which combust efficiently
