CPR/AED Algorithm Flashcards
Unresponsive and not breathing normally
Agonal breathing may be present in up to 40% of patients. Start CPR if only occasional or gasping breaths.
Call emergency services
Call 112 or 999
Emergency calltaker will guide you and advise on steps of CPR
Is there an AED available nearby
Give 30 chest compressions
Push hard & fast in centre of chest
HARD: at least 5cm
FAST: rate of 100-120 per minute
Give 2 rescue breaths
Minimise interruptions in compressions 1 second per breath
Maximum hands-off time 10 seconds
Continue CPR 30:2
Continue to push hard and fast
If more than 1 rescuer present, swap roles to avoid the compressor becoming tired
As soon as AED arrives, switch it on and follow instructions
Attach the AED immediately - continue compressions if more than 1 rescuer present
Follow AED instructions
Ensure nobody touching patient when delivering shock
